Still convenient as ever

I have been purchasing Eurail passes ever since I began traveling to Europe which was just after college. Though they are not as cheap as they once were (then again what is?) they are still convenient as ever. My favorite Eurail pass is the one with 15 days of travel that allow travelers to visit up to 18 countries within a two-month period. That's perfect for those who can't sit still in one place (like me) and want to see a variety of cities/countries.

In the old days (when I was on a tight budget) my friends and I used to purposely take the longer overnight trains so we didn't have to pay for a night in a hotel. But these days (now that I have a job) I prefer to travel during the day so I can see the marvellous European country side and get some work done while traveling. I now schedule high speed trains (when available) because they are so smooth and comfortable. Especially in first class! Although, first class isn't as much fun as second class (it's much easier to meet people in second class) , it is quieter and more conducive to get some work done. Unlike 10 years ago I now always bring my laptop and I love the fact that almost all carriages on European high speed trains have an electrical outlet. Therefore, I don't need to bring extra expensive and heavy batteries.

That reminds me: My best advice is to don't over pack (it's so much easier when you're not lugging extra baggage) and make sure you get your Eurail Pass validated (read the instructions that come with it) before getting on the train; otherwise risk paying an on-the-spot fine.

Also read all the benefits that come with a Eurail Pass because you could be in for some big savings. I have either received discounts or free travel on Parisian subways, or discount on buses and ferries. Last year I traveled with Irish Ferries from Rosslare in Ireland to Cherbourg in France and got a substantial discount just for showing my Eurail Pass.
