Train information
The national railway company Hrvatske Željeznice (HŽ) connects all major cities except Dubrovnik (which is by bus): www.hznet.hr
Train types: passenger and express (faster) trains, reservations required only on the ICN Zagreb – Split and the IC Zagreb – Rijeka/Osijek/Cakovec.
Bikes are allowed on certain trains upon advance purchase of a special bike ticket.
Ferries, ships, buses… everything but train
Good connections by ferry to/from Italy (Ancora, Bari, Venice).
Long distance bus services are a valid solution, the best place to receive information (and the only place to buy tickets) is at bus stations: www.akz.hr for Zagreb, www.ak-split.hr for Split, www.tz-rijeka.hr for Rijeka and Dubrovnik.
Major bus companies include: Autotrans, Brioni Pula and Contus.
Food and drink
Eat the typical dishes:
Girice (fried small fish);
Burek (pastry filled with cheese, meat or apples) and Pršut(home-cured ham).
The local cheese should also be tried:
Paški Sir (a sheep and goat’s cheese from the island of Pag, which has a very strong flavour and is certainly the most famous).
Accommodation
Private accommodation is easy to find and is usually a good compromise between
quality and price.
