Ferries, ships, buses… everything but train

Bus services cover certain destinations that are not reachable by train. The website
www.rejseplanen.dk is a very useful site where you can calculate your journey
selecting the means of transport you may want to use. If you have a bike you can
specify the maximum distance you want to pedal, and the system will return you
the best connections taking in account your choice. There are ferries for Sweden and
Norway (check departures from the harbours of Hirtshals or Frederikshavn)

Food and drink

Sample typical dishes like Smorrebrod (‘buttered bread’: open sandwiches laden with ingredients that are eaten throughout the day); Frikadeller (pan-fried meat balls) and Wienerbrod (‘Viennese bread’ is a typical Danish pastry with lots of butter).
Drink local beer: you will find 100 micro-breweries in addition to the local star
Carlsberg or Tuborg.

Accommodation

Camping and hostels are two natural solutions in Denmark.
Local Hostel Association: www.danhostel.dk
Hotels and Bed & Breakfasts: www.bbdk.dk
Camping: to camp in the official campsites, you need a card issued by the Camping
Card International or Camping Card Scandinavia (www.campingcardinternational.
com). The national website is www.camping.dk (Danish only). Free camping is
allowed when you have (informal) permission from the landowner.
