Train information

The national railway company is MAV-START Railway Passenger Transport Co.: www.mav-start.hu
Train types: Railjet (RJ, high speed trains), reservations are recommended; EuroCity (EC), reservations are possible but not required; EuroNight (EC), reservations are required on night trains; InterCity (IC), reservations are required for domestic travel; InterPici (IP, trains that complement intercity services),
reservations are required; Express (Ex), reservations are required; fast and passenger trains (regional or interregional), reservations not required.
*Bikes are allowed on most trains upon purchase of a special bike ticket.

Ferries, ships, buses… everything but train

Most bus operators are affiliated with the national network: Volan. Their website www.volan.eu provides useful information in English, although the timetable page is only in Hugarian. Note: fill the Honnan field for your departing location and the Hova field for your desired destination. The Keresztul field should only be filled in if you require a bus transfer along the way.

Food and drink

Eat Gulyas (meat soup/stew with lots of paprika); Liptoi Turo (delicious cheese spread with spices); Paprikas Csirke (chicken prepared with paprika); Porkolt (meat stew, same style as Gulyas but with less gravy); Langos (deep fried flat bread served with garlic, sauce or a cheese topping).
Drink Palinka (brandy made from stone fruits). Try the wines, especially those from the Tokaj region.

Accommodation

Look for szoba kiado signs if you looking for a private room. Find a bed at: www.hotels.hu
