Train information

The national railway company is Norges Statsbaner (NSB): www.nsb.no
Trains types: Long-distance and InterCity trains (both called NSB Regiontog),
Regiontog to Gothenburg, local trains, reservations are required. In other trains reservations are not required and only possible in NSB Komfort (business class) against payment of a supplement of NOK 90. Reservations are recommended for night trains.

Ferries, ships, buses… everything but train

Every town has a local bus station connected to an extensive network, refer to the main carrier at: www.nor-way.no or to www.rutebok.no, offering any kind of connection in the country (ferries included). Check also www.hurtigruten.no for information about the coastal steamer.

 

 

Food and drink

Eat seafood: Herring (pickled or marinated); Trout, Cod and Salmon (which is tasty smoked, grilled or cooked in any style). Try a delicious Smorbrod (a delectable open sandwich that won’t disappoint you).

Accommodation

There are many different kinds of accommodation around the country. Try to spend at least one night in a fishermen’s cabin or in a tent for a unique experience.

Note: camping is an excellent way to explore the country. The Allemannsretten (right of common access) allows you to camp in the wilderness (not on farmland or in gardens, etc), however, you must remain a minimum of 150m away from occupied houses. Open fires are forbidden in summer.
