Train types: EuroCity (EC, international intercity trains), reservations are required;
Tanie Linie Kolejowe (TLK, “economic” fast trains), reservations are only possible for
1st class; Ekspres InterCity (EIC or EkspresIC, domestic fast trains), reservations are
required; Expres (Ex, express domestic train), reservations are required; InterRegio
(IR, interregional trains) and Regio (R, regional trains), reservations are not required.
*Bikes are allowed on most trains upon purchase of a special bike ticket.
Ferries, ships, buses… everything but train
Travelling by bus can be a good way to complement trains in certain regions. The
best way to find bus timetables is by checking at the local PKS bus stations, often
located close to the station. Tickets are usually bought directly from the driver. There
are ferry connections to/from Finland from Gdynia.
Food and drink
Eat Pierogi (stuffed dumplings – some varieties are suitable for vegetarians); Żurek
(sour rye soup, usually with meat and egg); Bigos (cabbage and meat stew); Gołąbki
(cabbage rolls, stuffed with many ingredients).
Drink Miod Pitny (honey wine, mead); Podpiwek (black bread beer); Kompot (cold
infusion of dried fruits).
Accommodation
Try the biuro zakwaterowania or kwater prywatnych (accommodation agencies) to
make reservations. Look for pokoje or noclegi signs for private rooms. Find a bed with www.polhotels.com or www.staypoland.com
The Local Hostel Association is the Polskie Towarzystwo Schronisk. Mlodziezowych and their website is www.ptsm.org.pl. There are plenty of private hostels in the tourist areas.
